FOSS Land Snail Update

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) considers the land snail Helix aspersa to be a plant pest. The USDA in conjunction with the 50 State Departments of Agriculture regulate the transport of Helix aspersa and other land snails. There are three FOSSŪ modules that include an activity that uses land snails; they are Animals Two by Two, Structures of Life, and Diversity of Life.

Currently, Delta Education and the Lawrence Hall of Science FOSS project are working with the USDA to develop information for teachers about native or naturalized land snails appropriate for use in different regions of the country. This information will be posted on our web site as soon as it becomes available.

The following states allow the transport of land snails with a valid permit. Please follow the instructions with the Obtaining Land Snails Checklist.

AZ    CA    NM    TX    WA

If your state is not listed above, then it does NOT currently allow the transport of land snails. Please click the module you are using for some alternative activities.
