Developing Science Excellence through Educator Support

Professional Development is a key ingredient to the successful implementation of any new curriculum program. It is especially important with a hands-on, inquiry-based science program such as FOSS. Put our experience to work in your classroom and see how easy it is to engage students in active learning. We strive to develop long-term partnerships with districts and teachers through thoughtful planning, effective implementation, and ongoing teacher support.

Elements of our Professional Development services:

  • Planning. Careful planning is the key to successful implementation. We can help you set clear goals and benchmarks and build a customized plan that works for your district to meet the specific needs of your teachers.
  • Implementing. Effective implementation includes face-to-face workshops to introduce the FOSS materials, teaching resources, and instructional design. To build teacher confidence, we offer advanced workshops around specific teaching strategies, classroom coaching and mentoring, teacher preparation videos, and other online resources.
  • Sustaining. Program fidelity is sustained through ongoing support and leadership development. In addition to online videos and resources, the FOSS newsletter, summer institutes, and national workshops provide opportunities to network with other teachers and share ideas directly with the FOSS development staff.

Implementation Training

Delta Education offers a partnership with each district and the schools to design a multi-year implementation plan to meet specific needs and goals. The customized plan may include workshops, institutes, and other forums for the training of teacher-leaders to help ensure the best use of the materials and implement with fidelity to the program, and the development of teachers to guide and instruct their students in science.

The support Delta Education provides ensures strong implementation and continued success in areas of teacher preparation, student performance, leadership development, and administrative and community support. Through the FOSS Development Staff from the Lawrence Hall of Science and a network of experienced FOSS Consultants, we are confident that we have a team that is not only dedicated but also competent to achieve the greatest results possible.

Conference Workshops and Panels

Teachers participate in a FOSS workshop

Learn as your students will in hands-on workshops led by presenters with years of experience with the FOSS program. Network with current users from a wide variety of different schools from across the country. Explore implementation case studies with panels of curriculum and classroom experts and learn how using FOSS has improved not only student success, but also the school and staff culture.

FOSS Institutes

Single and multi-day insitutes are available throughout the year for science teachers, science coordinators and specialists, curriculum directors, and administrators. New and existing FOSS users alike will learn about:

  • How FOSS addresses the three dimensions of the NGSS
  • Student engagement in science and engineering practices through first-hand investigation
  • Embedded teaching strategies including science notebooking, content reading, assessment, and more
  • Effective implementation strategies for schools and districts
  • Grade- or strand-specific learning progressions
  • Program components and resources

FOSS Newsletters

The FOSS Newsletter helps FOSS users develop a network of support across the country. Delta Education and the Lawrence Hall of Science work together to bring you news two times per year, including articles regarding the latest development of modules, tips about management from teachers and administrators, ways to make connections with other teachers and districts, extensions and reading materials to add to modules you are already using, and informative articles about good educational practices.
